Notes:
A statewide mail survey of primary and secondary wood product manufacturers was underaken to quantify the production and consumption of wood residues. Virginia Employment Commission data as of 12/31/1996 was used to extrapolate and thereby estimate the total wood residue volumes produced in each SIC (Standard Industrial Classification Code).
Approximately 8 percent of the hardwood total was produced by pine sawmills.
Approximately 5 percent of pine total was produced by Hardwood sawmills.
Engineered wood manufacturers included: hardboard, laminated, veeneer lumber, oriented strandboard, and particleboard.
Hardwood plywood manufacturers included: hardwood plywood, face grade veneers, and veneer.
Rough mill operations included: box springs, cabinets and cabinet components, doors, edge glued panels, flooring, furniture parts, laminated furniture parts, millwork, and timbers.
Housing manufacturers included: log homes, modular housing, post frame buildings, prefabricated wall panels, trusses, and utility buildings.
"Other" manufacturers included: mulch, chip, post, piling, steam, travel trailers, novelties, electricity, pipe organ, handle, stake manufacturers, boat repairing, wood preserves, and building supplies.
Totals may not equal sum of components due to independent rounding.
